Canadian Conservatives Should Have Gone Full MCGA – Make Canada Great Again
I'm on X: @writejohnseiler
Trump showed them how to do it. Some learn. Some don’t.
Conservative Pierre Poilievre lost in Canada’s election with a wimpy platform of mild tax cuts. He should have gone full MCGA – Make Canada Great Again. He should have posed as Canada’s Trump: big tax cuts, tough trade deals, immigration restriction, restoring gun and free-speech rights.
Here’s how bad it is. According to Statistique Canada, their government site:
Real GDP per capita has now declined in five of the past six quarters and is currently near levels observed in 2017.
How could a conservative not turn that into a landslide?
The winner was carny Mark Carney, of the “Liberal” Party, which under Justin Trudeau and, before him, his communist pa Pierre Trudeau (or, if cuckolded, Fidel Castro), plunged the Great White North into socialist tyranny. When I was growing up near Detroit, Canada actually was more conservative than le Sud. Then they got Liberal PM Lester Pearson, 1963-68, their LBJ, although with no Vietnam War, who imposed socialized medicine and the dopey maple leaf flag. He was followed by Trudeau pere who, I seem to recall from an article in the 1970s, was an admirer of Mao. No doubt their eternal punishment in Dante’s Inferno is torturing one another.
Carney is a full-on Establishment hack, having been not only the head of Canada’s central bank, but the Bank of England. It’s as if Jerome Powell had been the head of the Bank of China, then took up his current post as Fed chairman, then was elected president.
After winning, Carny whined:
As I have been warning for months, America wants our land, our resources, our water, our country. But these are not idle threats. President Trump is trying to break us so that America can own us. That will never ever happen …. We are over the shock of the American betrayal, but we should never forget the lessons. We have to look out for ourselves. And above all we have to take care of each other.
Did he actually take Trump seriously? Or is he posing? Likely the latter. Everybody’s saying he won because Trump blabbed his takeover idea.
Except Poilievre campaigned as if he were selling himself as a virtual soporific. I watched some of their debate in English – my French extends to an Inspector Clouseau imitation – which also featured a Quebec guy and an even more extreme socialist. I kept waiting for Poilievre to go Trumpish and throw out some insults. Certainly there were opportunities.
And how is Canada supposed to prevent a takeover when its per capita income keeps slipping well below that of the United States? You can’t stay independent if you economy is sliding toward Haiti’s.
I have Canadian friends and feel sorry for them. But if they want to remain independent from le Sud, here’s what they should do: Imitate Switzerland. Ditch socialism and go capitalist. Their business tax is a shocking 50%, compared to 21% here, soon to be cut by Trump to 15%. (Plus 8.84% more if you’re stupid enough to locate your biz in California.)
How can Canada’s businesses compete when they’re paying 50% in tax, more than thrice America’s soon-to-be 15%? You can’t remain an economic basket case and stay independent. And here’s Carney pushing even more anti-growth green mania than we suffer in California:
We have an enormous opportunity to bring climate change into the heart of every financial decision. We can deliver the net zero world that you’ve demanded, and that our future generations deserve.
Next, Canada should ditch its free-speech restrictions and gun controls. When I was a kid, my cousins used to take their guns across the Ambassador Bridge and go hunting in the Ontario woods. The border authorities just waved them through. Those were days of freedom.
Yeah, the socialized medicine has to go. Don’t adopt America’s model, which is a quasi-working private model on which is strapped a socialist model. That’s why medical care here costs twice as much. Although it’s still better than Canada’s model where – this really happened – one woman had to wait 10 months to get a hospital appointment to give birth.
And immigration has to be controlled. In the past decade, its population has increased by 6 million, to 42 million, or 17%, all due to immigration. That’s straining their resources much as it has here. And like here, because the immigrants vote left, the leftists – the “Liberal” Party – want even more immigration so they can keep a lock on power.
Finally, Canada should bolster its military, currently just 1.3% of GDP, well below the NATO minimum of 2%. It’s a paper grizzly. What happened to the brave lads who landed on Juno Beach on D-Day, the sixth of June, 1944?
I’m practically a pacifist now. But we do need defense. Canada should specialize in beefing up its army and navy in the arctic to counter Russia, the only country with nuclear-powered ice breakers. It would be a point of pride, and independence, for Canada to take over that task from the U.S.
Just some ideas, Canadians. When you’re free again, invite me up for a couple of Molson’s. In the summer. I’m too old for a Michigan-Ontario winter.
