With the war not going well for the government of Ukraine, even the U.S. media is starting to inject a little realism into its over-the-top Zelensky boosterism. CNN just reported, “What happens to weapons sent to Ukraine? The U.S. doesn’t really know.”
What could “happen” is what the CIA calls “blowback.” An American foreign policy adventure ends up “blowing back” on our country. An obvious example is the aid to Afghanistan in the 1980s in its fight to expel the Soviets. The blowback was it ended up becoming a base for terrorists, with bin Laden cooking up the 9/11 attack. Then Bush, instead of entirely and only going after bin Laden — who ended up being killed in another country, Pakistan, a decade later — invaded the whole country, where we stayed for 20 years.
Well, what could “happen” to the U.S. weapons weapons disappearing into the Ukraine black hole? One possibility is, with President Biden not defending our Southern border, the weapons could end up wending their way back to the their country of origin — the USA.
So you’re flying to see Aunt Sally in Dubuque, when a Stinger missile blows you out of the sky. Or you’re taking an Amtrak train on a cross-country vacation, and a Javelin anti-tank missile derails you over a bridge and you fall into the water.
Meanwhile, sending all those weapons to Ukraine depletes the U.S. supply, which will be replaced with new requisitions, gaining vast new profits for the Military-Industrial Complex. Our NATO allies also will be sending in new orders to replace the weapons they shipped to Ukraine.
How much of her vast investment portfolio, fattened by insider information available only to members of Congress, did Nancy Pelosi shift to defense companies just before the Feb. 24 Russian invasion?
The CNN story wrote of the arms transfers, “It’s a conscious risk the Biden administration is willing to take.” There’s no risk to them. Biden soon will be in a retirement home. His staff will be cashing in on memoirs and membership on corporate boards.
But what about us? Jack and Jane Ameircano, trying to make ends meet — buy the diapers, feed the kids, fix the roof — as inflation eats up their income? Why are their lives now being risked by this blowback, which could strike us at any minute?
The last time Ukraine fell apart, they even made a movie about it. It was a pretty good action flick starring Nicolas Cage, “Lord of War.” A summary: “Cage plays a fictional illegal arms dealer, inspired by the stories of several real-life arms dealers and smugglers. The film was officially endorsed by the human rights group Amnesty International for highlighting the issue of illicit arms trafficking by the international arms industry.”
Soon there will be a lot of material for several sequels.
